IN-PERSON FOSTER CARE INFORMATION SESSIONS RETURN TO LCCS

Lucas County Children Services seeking prospective foster parents.

 

TOLEDO, Ohio, August 13, 2021: Lucas County Children Services is bringing back free,

socially-distanced training classes for those interested in becoming foster parents. The agency

is offering four different rounds of in-person classes at the LCCS Training Center, 711 Adams

Street, in downtown Toledo. Completing the preservice training program is the first step

toward becoming licensed to care for children who cannot live safely at home.

 

Training will be offered:

• August 23-28 (Monday-Saturday)

• September 17-26 (Friday-Sunday; 2 Weekends)

• October 22-31 (Friday-Sunday; 2 Weekends)

• December 3-12 (Friday-Sunday; 2 Weekends)

 

Sessions run from 9 a.m. – noon, and 1 – 4 p.m. To register, call 419-213-3336 or visit

Qualifying to be a foster or adoptive parent is easier than you think. You…

 

• Must be at least 18 years of age to adopt or become a foster parent.

• Participate in the free training. All caretaking adults in the household must attend.

• Must demonstrate a source of income sufficient to care for yourself.

• Can own or rent a home or apartment with at least two bedrooms. Your home must pass a safety inspection.

• All adults in the home must provide references and pass a background check.

• Can be married, single or in a relationship.

• Can work outside the home.

• Receive financial support, based on your foster child(ren)’s needs.

We are still distributing the Abbott BinaxNOW COVID-19 Home Test kits via curbside service at each of our branches. Supply is limited so we encourage you to call ahead to ensure availability at your local branch. Please note you will need the following to take this test: A computer with video calling capabilities, a smartphone, internet access and an email address.

 

Vaccination Card Lamination

Each of our branches is offering free lamination service of the COVID-19 vaccination cards. Please note this service is for vaccination cards only.

 

StoryWalk® Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Monday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m.

Lorain Public Library System is excited to announce a new StoryWalk® at Black River Landing in Lorain! A StoryWalk® is an exciting way to combine physical activity with literacy. Children’s picture book pages are mounted on frames that are laid out along a trail inviting children, families and caregivers to follow along. The library will change the books monthly April through November, weather permitting. Free Tutoring – El Centro’s 231Go! middle school collaborative is offering tutoring and homework help sessions by appointment. We have bilingual tutors available throughout the school year.  For more information, contact Veronica Gonzalez at 440-277-8235 Ext. 7014.

August 21 and 28 – Bilingual HUD-certified Homebuyer Education workshops - These classes will help to improve financial literacy to the residents of Lorain County.  El Centro is offering homebuyers two courses (four hours per class) focused on:  Financial Literacy (budgeting & saving) and the home ownership process to prepare participants on the homebuying process. Partner Organization Events:

 

Avanzando Through College is a learning community at Lorain County Community College that is open to Latinx (Latino/Hispanic) first-year, second-year, and transfer students. The year-long program starts in the fall semester (Sept 13th) as a 12-week course fulfilling the new student experience requirement for two credits. Students will participate in special events, peer mentoring, and academic support activities during the spring semester. Students receive $500 for completing the entire program (flyer attached).
